Jaundice in Newborn

Jaundice is a very common condition present in almost half of full-term babies and even more in preterm babies. It is characterised by yellowish discolouration of eyes and skin. Bilirubin (a pigment present in Red Blood Cells) increases in body due to breakdown of red blood cells.  The Foetus does not have sufficient bacteria which can convert bilirubin to other products. Bilirubin gives the characteristic yellow colour. It is treated by exposure to light and is not dangerous in most cases
